Camped on the edge of the great southern ocean
High on the cliffs of a vast empty plain
The last fiery glow of the embers of evening
Light the remains of a travellers day
And far out to sea where the tall ships once charted
Out where the whales sing their oldest of songs
Darkness descends in a mystical blanket
Spreading the dust of the heavens around us
And out to the place where our spirits belong
Starlight upon the sea
Southern cross comfort me
Carry me over and carry me through
Darkness surround me now your arms around me
How lucky to travel australia with you
And if canvas and campfire
and clear constellations
Made up the journeys we travel each day
We’d soften our fears
with the breath of the ocean
And cast off our cares as the dawn slips away
And far out to sea on the starry horizon
The edge of infinity so distant so clear
And some speak of fate and the forces of nature
Some speak of Jesus and follow religion
And others believe in this valley of tears
Starlight upon the sea
Southern cross comfort me
Carry me over and carry me through
Darkness surround me now your arms around me
How lucky to travel australia with you
